Yes, there certainly is an irony, that the actual teachings of Jesus are opposed to what the noisy evangelical (and very political) churches are preaching. Most mainline protestant denominations (other than the Southern Baptists) are fighting the right wing agenda. The Unitarian Universalists (not Christian) also support the humanistic values that matter to me.
