Yes, it's up to us as writers to do better. To write female characters whose lives are not defined by marriage and/or motherhood. To write stories of friendships, partnerships, nontraditional families, creative obsessions, and resourceful one-of-a-kinds.

And up to all of us to value and respect such lives when we encounter them in friends and family members.
