Those sweetest words aren't necessarily a lie. Sometimes we really do anticipate correctly. But we need to be careful, because our fear of being wrong can make us lie to ourselves in many different ways.

An excellent book on this phenomenon is K. Schultz's Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error.
