There is nothing new, of course, about the racism. What is new is how Trump has called it out of the shadows and made it safe for people to embrace again. And with it, all the misogyny, xenophobia, and heterosexism that festers in the boil that is his base.
My fervent hope is that Trump and his toadies will be so resoundingly repudiated this November that their racist followers will realize the world is moving on without them.
There will be much rebuilding to be done, once Trump is gone. Many families and friendships are broken beyond repair. I hope I live to see something better rise from the wreckage he leaves in his wake.
