The Christian scriptures are replete with references to the indifference of fate. Ecclesiastes to be sure, but also Psalms and Lamentations. Jesus explicitly rejects the just-world thinking in the story about the man born blind (Did he sin or his parents?), pointing out how no one's righteousness protects them from calamity.

Unfortunately, many religious people ignore the actual teachings of their religions, preferring to believe that they can "earn" blessings by good works, prayers, or beliefs.
