That was the moment when I realized my last marriage had been an awful mistake, when she insisted all my books--even the ones I hadn't finished reading--should be shelved. In the home where I grew up, "put away" meant bookmarked and stacked on the nearest table, but library books were mostly open and face-down when they weren't in hand.
