Dating is a beauty contest from the start, with many wonderful people mostly excluded from participating because they don’t fit the image of an ideal date — certain kind of looks, certain age, lighter skin, slim body, not handicapped, stylish clothes, outgoing personality, no children, etc. This is part of why I wish people would just cultivate many friendships first, then consider dating the friends they get along with best.
