Sympathy would be too much to ask for such a tyrant--arguably a mass murderer--but I don't choose to emulate his disdain for all compassion.

There are other reasons, though, to hope he does recover, as other commenters have pointed out. A swift death is much too good for him, and it would deprive the country of the healing we can find in voting him out, hopefully followed by locking him up.
