Sure, Patricia. Can't say I actually understand as much as some of the "older" members, but here's what I know.

Medium is controlled primarily by computer programs, since it would take way too many human operators to make all the decisions about what article to put into each member's feed at any given moment, since there are close to 100 million active members and tens of thousands of articles uploader every day.

Those computer programs are guided by subprograms called algorithms that use various bits of information to rate the suitability of each story for each user. They might consider the tags on the article, whether this reader follows this writer, when the article was written, how many others have read or clapped for it, or other data.

Medium has been making adjustments to those algorithms lately, and some of us don't think those adjustments are good for writers or for readers. I'm pretty sure a lot of my regular readers aren't seeing my stories in their feed. Until this story on the incels, I had not had an article earn over $40 in the last 2 months. Before that, I could count on $300+ about every 6-8 tries.

Some of us consider ourselves professional writers, and we need to be able to count on earning a steady income here, which we were doing before the changes. Many writers better than I have seen their earnings drop severely, and Medium's administrators have yet to provide a convincing explanation for why they think the changes are needed.
