I suspect there are just as many girls, but they don't get diagnosed because their symptoms don't stand out in the same way or make as many problems for teachers. Instead, they get diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression, usually in early adolescence, and the root problem is often never recognized.

ADHD is strongly heritable. (My kids got it from both sides. I got it from my mom.) But ADHD parents tend to contribute to the problems with over-emotional and under-organized habits.
