Someone needs to rewrite Madame Bovary for modern times, with Emma hooking up on Ashley Madison. It's been decades since I read it, but I'm pretty sure Flaubert's moralism wasn't as heavy-handed as Tolstoy's in Anna Karenina.

As for the pantaloon question, I can't find any reference to them being undergarments. Still, more fun to say than knickers.
