David Schnarch, the sexual/marital therapist, observed in his book "Passionate Marriage" that he could tell the married couples from the dating couples in a restaurant because the former weren't talking. Some had just lost interest in one another; others had found too many subjects likely to provoke another argument.

It doesn't have to be that way, of course, but it takes courage to pursue the conversation where it leads us.
