Religion in the US is primarily associated with belief in god(s), like Yahweh or Allah. God-worship is hard to sustain in an educated world, which is why god-based religions tend to be suspicious of education. Theistic religions also breed authoritarian attitudes, violence, and suppression of women and minorities.

Beyond the Christian and Islamic world, religion is associated more with philosophy, meditation, spiritual discipline, and virtuous living. I hope, as Evangelical Protestantism declines in the US, these healthier spiritual perspectives will gain acceptance.
