People feel threatened by calls to defund the police, but realistically it's time to reconsider our whole approach to public safety.

Yes, there are good cops. There are probably jurisdictions in which all the officers are truly committed to serving and protecting every member of the community.

But police culture draws bad apples, wannabe thugs with little interest in public service, and it arms those people and puts them under the kind of pressure that turns many police forces into gangs.

Research going back generations has found law enforcement officers to be far more racist, authoritarian, misogynistic, and violent than the general population, and less mentally stable or willing to seek help with emotional problems.

And Trump's their kind of guy, which makes me really nervous about how they're going to take it when he loses.
