Pedophilia (American spelling) is a sick perversion that has been practiced--mostly in secret but sometimes openly--by men with wealth and power for centuries. Since the internet, it has become an underground industry worth billions of dollars.

But the part of it of which you write, the hidden-in-plain-sight part that has taken root within our culture, is IMO another problem, just as serious or maybe worse, but different.

I could well be wrong, but it seems to me that a big part of this problem is that we begin to sexualize girls almost from birth by teaching them to strive for thinness and prettiness, to start looking for boyfriends in middle school or earlier, to dress in sexy clothes and practice flirting, and so on. This, along with pushing standards of beauty that emphasize youthfulness, can't help affecting our mentality regarding female sexuality.

I don't know the answer. But I think we need to take a hard look at ourselves. It does no good to blame the media or the fashion and cosmetic industries, culpable as they are, for selling us what we keep buying.

Because what we're doing to our children is insane.
