Of course standards matter. But those "alpha" qualities matter less and less, the farther you get from high school. People grow up and start to realize the difference between surfaces that lose their sheen versus enduring virtues that improve with experience.

I think, now that the average woman marries late or not at all, more mature women will come to dominate the dating scene, and the HS football star will have to polish his resume to stay in the game.
