Not knowing is another aspect of male privilege. Some men never muster the curiosity to ask or even Google the stats. Others are exposed to them but choose not to believe. Many of us live in fear--not just of learning who among our relatives and family friends has been victimized, but also of learning who among the men we have liked and respected is a rapist.

Those revelations hurt, as does the truth exposed by them: that our male-dominated world is more corrupt than we imagined possible.
