None of this surprises me, but it still makes me sad for all of us, and ashamed for my gender (cis-male).
Public awareness campaigns, in the absence of social shaming or other penalties, are not likely to reach the perpetrators of this kind of violence. Because, just as with the Trump administration's treatment of immigrants, the cruelty was not incidental, it was the point.
Men who catcall or intimidate women they see on the street may not consciously intend to cause harm, but they are asserting their right to be aggressive, which in their minds is simply part of being male.
What it will take to change that will be nothing less than a cultural revolution, and I doubt it will be accomplished in less than a couple of generations.
