I've been through the sad experience of dating and loving commitment-phobic women, twice. In both cases, I was generous with (mostly inexpensive) gifts and acts of service. The giving was, to me, a natural expression of the way I valued the person and the relationship. I should have paid attention to how little I was getting back, even in quality time.

I can't help and wouldn't change my generous spirit, but I'm learning the wisdom of watching for reciprocity as a sign of the other's investment in the relationship.
