It is indeed a sad experience, that realization that a once-respected mind has fallen into senescence, or into some other trap in which certainty displaces curiosity, humility, and openness to new ideas.

It isn't always age. Religion conquers many noble minds; others fall to wealth, to politics, to trauma. We all lose when it happens.
