I think you’re just being argumentative. Obviously, there is more than one definition for the word “compete.” Consider how many sensations are competing for your attention at this moment, much as products compete for your money in the marketplace.

Likewise “standards.” I think we all should have high standards in all things, not just in our dating choices but in what we consume (including media) and what activities we allow to occupy our time. And those standards will be our own, since we all are individuals.
