I think this statement is overly pessimistic. If it were true, friendship would even be impossible within groups, as we nearly always want things others are able to provide.

But not all relationships are exploitive or transactional. Many individuals, regardless of what gender they may be, do manage to see one another as equals. The ability to do so is called humility, and not everybody learns that virtue, but it has not completely disappeared.

Just my opinion.
