I suspect some of the mansplaining impulse arises from insecurity. Many men are at least subliminally aware that women are vastly more emotionally intelligent, so they try to compensate--and prove they still have value--by pretending to be superior in rational matters. (I covered that point in a recent article.)

That said, this particular asshat may have been negging you. He sounds more evil than clueless.
