I know you've heard, the difference between fiction and nonfiction is that fiction has to make sense. Truth can be more random; it's just what it is.
Oh, and about nonfiction (memoir etc)--it's hardly any truer than a fairy tale. It's still somebody's story, told by some story-teller.
So write the truth. Show us how it works for people like these. Tell us what you know, because you know. Write it past tense, like it already happened, because it did, somewhere. And tell it in 3rd person shifting POV so we can grasp the flaws in each character's understanding of the other and the situation.
But Ray was right, maybe not about the chasing, but you have to follow--and sometimes to lead--the people who start camping in your head. That's what they're waiting for.
Let me know how it goes.
