Good job, LJ! We need more of this kind of thoughtful analysis backed up with references.
I agree that this is a social phenomenon that needs to be addressed on other ways than simply shaming the group with the problem. Which does not mean relieving them of responsibility for their actions, but rather giving them the opportunity to get help for the underlying social and emotional disfunction.
The best option would be to add psychology to the curriculum at the middle school and HS level. But I can't see our Republican state legislatures doing anything that smart.
