Glad to see someone addressing this, Aysia. I'd begun to wonder, too. Even saw an article posted where the writer had dropped the period from the end of every paragraph.

The em-dash is trending--I love it, myself--while semicolons are disappearing; many people feel the latter are insufferable stuffy. But there's nothing like a period to say you've made your point.
