German is the language if you want to swear in public. A few of my favorites: Mist (same as Scheiss but not so widely recognized. Donner und Blitzen (thunder and lightning). Quatsch (nonsense, not technically offensive but not exactly polite either, and it sounds strong). And as a term of endearment for some of the patrons you're describing, Dorftrottel (village idiot).
