Gaming the system would be trivially easy. Just put a comment on every article you see by an author needing follows: "I'll follow you if you'll follow me."

What I'm encouraging people to do instead is participate in good faith, be a part of the community. It's hard to get people to read your articles, no matter how well written, when you're starting out. But commenting invites other writers to come see your stuff.
