Dr. King's nonviolent strategy was patterned on the example of Mohandas Gandhi, who led the people of India in their resistance to the occupying army of Great Britain. There was tremendous violence done--brutal beatings and one huge and horrifying massacre--but the violence was all done by the British against the unresisting Indians, awakening the conscience of the world and shaming the British into eventual surrender.

Such tactics would be hopeless against the Trump regime, which knows nothing of conscience and is incapable of shame, but if we can hold on a little longer, that regime will be repudiated by the better angels of the American people, and progress may resume toward the justice he preached.
