Connections are the key for sure. Given the preponderance of teenagers in the Reddit forums, it seems likely that many of these boys feel shunned by the HS social scene, and they don't have the kind of support at home that would enable them to grow through that adversity into mature men.
And part of the larger contextual problem is that there is too little pressure on males to grow up emotionally. I wrote about that earlier ("Why Do Men Pretend to be More Rational than Women?"), and you have frequently alluded to that problem in your articles. (I'm a big fan.)
