You make some excellent points. A writer, regardless of genre, needs something to say. And no amount of talent or wordsmithery will save him or her from well-deserved obscurity if that is lacking.

You paint--or tar--with an overly broad brush, however. There are many excellent poets writing these days, and some of the lit journals are good at recognizing high-quality writing.

OTOH there is also a lot getting published that to me seems like pretentious crap. If it's so obscure, vague, and confusing that it could mean anything, I generally assume it doesn't.
