Approaching 72, still hoping for another chance to fall in love. Best drug ever, hands down. But if it happens, it will grow out of a friendship based on respect and trust, the kind that doesn't happen overnight.

My second marriage lasted over 20 years, during which we fell passionately in love with one another many times. But the sex, transcendent as it often was, would never have sustained us through the hard times. That took friendship, the security of knowing we were partners and would always look out for each other, even on the days we didn't like each other very much.

I almost didn't read this story, since I have little interest in celebrities (and even less in their affairs). But considering who wrote it, I figured you must have spotted something worth pondering in their relationship. I was right.
